Arriving from Canggu to the great temple of Tanah Lot, one gets a first glimpse of what awaits further ahead when setting out on an adventure along the south west coast of the island. Reigned over by Mt Batukaru, the second highest peak in Bali, this beautiful, yet one of the least visited area of Bali opens itself gleefully and with grandeur to the one who will allow it a moment of its time. Known by the wind surfers who have travelled its road for years already to catch a thrill in the wind engulfing pockets of Soka beach and surrounding, it was before mostly common ground to the many Javanese trucks which labour its main highway day in day out carrying supplies back and forth between Bali and Java.
Fortunately smaller roads are plenty and the magic operates within minutes. Winding through, the villages traversed are typical and charming, with farmers and tile makers sharing the land. Rivers are plenty, running their course to the ocean in dramatic manners, purifying and providing, having carved for centuries astonishing landscapes. And when comes the season the extensive “sea” of verdant rice fields rolling over the heals seems so kind to the eyes one cannot but bow in awe.
The word must be out somehow as slowly but surely everyone seems to be travelling these routes. Soon the vogue will do so as well, in search of fresh and renewed inspiration, leaving one to think that “now”, before the many do - and plenty become the hotels, villas and restaurants crowding its pristine beaches - now is the time to discover and enjoy the beautiful secret, entering thus the select group of those “in the know” for present and future time.
